Renewed commitments to human rights at the high-level event for the 75 anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
On 11-12 December, 2023, the UN Human Rights led a high level event in Geneva to mark the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event organized on the occasion of Human Rights Day (10 December) garnered pledges and marked the culmination of national and regional dialogues, including the European and Central Asia dialogue on the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
The two-day event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights marked the culmination of extensive dialogues, thematic consultations, and multi-stakeholder recommendations. At the heart of this event co-hosted by the Government of Switzerland was the symbolic growth of the pledging tree, embodying collective efforts towards a shared vision for the future of human rights. The event marked an occasion to reinvigorate the principles enshrined in the Declaration and bolster the human rights eco-system.
Bringing together Member States, civil society organizations, local governments, human rights advocates, and various stakeholders, the event provided a dynamic platform to address both persistent and emerging human rights issues. Participants engaged in constructive dialogue, sharing their commitments for the next 25 years and contributing to the forthcoming 2024 Summit of the Future.
To this end, UN Human Rights received around 800 pledges, including from 153 States spanning from women’s rights, disability rights, business ethics, economic and social rights, to treaty ratifications. As such 23 States committed to undertaking 41 ratifications of core international human rights treaties, demonstrating a tangible commitment to advancing human rights globally.
As part of the Human Rights 75 campaign and in the lead up to the high-level event, UN Human Rights conducted Regional Dialogues focusing on key thematic areas. One such dialogue, the Regional Dialogue for Europe and Central Asia held on October 20, 2023, spotlighted the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, yielding pledges and outcomes can be found here.
