THE UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS REPRESENTATION OFFICE TO THE EUROPEAN UNION
Based in Brussels since 2009, and initially conceptualized as a Regional Office for Europe, the Representation Office to the European Union is one of the 80+ field presences of the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) around the world working to advance the protection and promotion of human rights for all. We are supported by the Regional Hub for Europe and Central Asia, based in Vienna, and UN Human Rights headquarters in Geneva.
Mandate
The Representation Office to the EU (ROEU) works to place human rights at the core of the European Union's internal and external action, securing the EU-OHCHR partnership and ensuring that the overall human rights system is supported.
- Based on the mandate of the High Commissioner for Human Rights as described in UN General Assembly resolution 48/141.
- Grounded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the international human rights treaties and standards.
- Guided by the recommendations of the UN human rights mechanisms, namely the Universal Periodic Review, UN Treaty Bodies, and Special Procedures of the UN Human Rights Council.
ROEU raises awareness about the work of the Office including its 80+ field presences, the independent mandate of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations human rights mechanisms and their recommendations, and contributes to the strengthening of the United Nations human rights pillar.
ROEU develops and nurtures relations, partnerships, and networks with all levels of EU institutions, regional organizations, rights-holders, NGOs, civil society, businesses and local actors, and academic institutions.
