UN Human Rights commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On Human Rights Day (10 December) and throughout the year, the UN Human Rights Regional Office for Europe commemorated the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Over the last week, the Office organized a screening in Brussels, dressed the Manneken Pis and Jeanneke Pis for the occasion, and projected a message on the Eiffel Tower

In 2023, we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

For 75 years, the core ambition of the Declaration has been to infuse societies with equality, fundamental freedoms and justice. Around Human Rights Day, the Regional Office for Europe has organized several events to commemorate the anniversary.

On 5 December, the Office organized the premiered Dr. Jane Goodall's documentary "Reasons for Hope" in Belgium. The screening opened with a live intervention from the United Nations Mr. Volker Türk followed by Vice-President of the European Commission Ms. Věra Jourová' keynote speech. Close to 700 participants joined the event in Flagey, Brussels.

Over the weekend, the Office also dressed the Manneken Pis and the cove of the Jeanneke Pis to mark the occasion. Hundreds of people visit Belgium's most famous statues, further raising the visibility of the anniversary.

On 9-10 December the Regional Office, together with the City of Paris, projected "Human Rights 75 years" onto the Eiffel Tower, one of the most famous landmark buildings in the world. The Office then joined the commemoration and conference organized by the mayor of Paris.
