In a mission to Greece, the OHCHR team interacts with rights-holders as well as duty-bearers and supports Greece’s rejection of proposals for a return to detention policy A joint team of Regional Office for Europe and the OHCHR headquarters, led by Regional Representative for Europe Jan Jařab, carried out a mission to Greece on 8 to 11 November 2015. The mission was facilitated by the Secretary-General for Human Rights of the Ministry of Justice.

The human rights of persons in institutional care is one of the key human rights challenges in Europe today. Over the past five years, OHCHR’s Regional Office for Europe has sought to bring attention to the challenges that these persons face through a series of events entitled “Forgotten Europeans”. The fifth event in this series took place in October 2014, and pioneered a human-rights-based approach to persons with psychosocial disabilities.

Representatives of 24 EU Member States participated in a seminar on the recommendations of international human rights mechanisms, organized in Brussels by the Regional Office for Europe of the UN Human Rights office (OHCHR) on 18 and 19 April 2013. The seminar focused on the ways in which the recommendations of the United Nations human rights mechanisms – the Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, and the Universal Periodic Review – can be used to improve the human rights of migrants.

Human Rights Day is celebrated in Brussels by screening of awarded film dealing with Chilean plebiscite on Pinochet’s Presidency. The creative director of the 1988 “No” campaign, Eugenio García, and other past and present activists discuss the way in which people can make their voices heard even in extremely challenging circumstances. Panelists speak of a contest between hope and fear. They stress the importance of reconnecting with oneself and of seemingly small ways of resisting oppression.
